Ureteroscopy is an endoscopic surgical technique that is used to remove stones (lithiasis treatment). It is indicated for cases in which the stones have proved resistant to shock waves, or are located in the distal section of the ureter.
It involves the introduction, through the urethra, bladder and ureter, of an endoscope fitted with a laser that destroys the fragmented stones. It enables the destruction of 90–95% of stones using:
- Holmium laser or pneumatic lithotripsy.
- Semi-rigid ureteroscopes of various calibres.
